9 Movies That Everyone Has Been Tricked Into Believing They Love

4. The Great Performance Trick - Ray

Universal Pictures

I won't dispute the fact that Jamie Foxx was great in Ray. There is no doubt in my mind that he deserved his Oscar - he did a truly wonderful job in embodying the late music legend Ray Charles for this big screen biopic.

What a lot of people seemed to have missed, however, is that Foxx's performance was near enough the only notable thing about the movie itself - the charm and splendour that the actor brought to the table near pretty much saved this movie from its own mediocrity. The fact is we've all been tricked into thinking the film itself is great, when only Foxx really is.

Though a great biopic is almost always made or broken on the strength of its lead performance, it's rather clear to see just how unremarkable this movie is when you take Foxx out of the equation. What do you get? Something that - quite frankly - resembles that of a TV movie. Whereas Walk the Line (the Johnny Cash biopic) might have been a great movie without Joaquin Phoenix (there are lots of good individual aspects to that one), Ray relies purely on the dedication and jazz of its brilliant lead actor to stop us from realising how unimaginative it all is.
