9 Movies That Everyone Has Been Tricked Into Believing They Love

3. The "I Totally Get It" Trick - Inception

Warner Bros.

Inception is an interesting movie, but it is not - as so many people seem to believe - an "intelligent movie." That's not to knock the fact that this puzzle box of a picture will keep you entertained for the sum of its parts, but just like a puzzle box, once it's solved, there's nothing left to explore. Which is another way of saying that Christopher Nolan's movie is all about style and nothing about substance: there was a real push from fans (and even some movie critics) that say that Nolan had crafted a blockbuster worthy of Kubrick when this came out. Come on! But there's something attractive about the idea of pledging love to Inception in all its glory, if only so that you tell other people things like "I worked it out" and "don't worry, it totally holds up." The problem is that there's nothing to hold up except for the narrative, which is a trick in itself. Here, the trick is the movie's drive to have you believe there's any real point to the complex storytelling. And it's not really Nolan's fault that people mistook this obvious B-movie as a picture of "substance." Simply put, people who love Inception (as opposed to people who like it) are convinced there's more to this movie than there actually is - and they want others to know it.
