9 Movies You Didn't Realise Are Set In The Same Universe
3. Fast And Furious & Better Luck Tomorrow
Better Luck Tomorrow is a thought-provoking (if slightly disturbing) crime-drama that explores the unreasonable expectations placed on Asian-Americans to excel in scholastics, and the deadly side effects of that pressure. The Fast and Furious series basically acts as an experiment in one-upping each previous installment when it comes to big, dumb, action set pieces.
So what's the connection there? For one, Taiwanese director Justin Lin helmed Better Luck Tomorrow and four of the Fast and Furious films, including the oft-misunderstood Tokyo Drift installment, which seemed to split off from the rest of the rest of the Furious universe. It was also the first time the franchise featured Han, a drifter with loose ties to the Yakuza.
But Han (played by Sung Kang) was first introduced in Better Luck Tomorrow, as the calm, cool enforcer of his high school gang of delinquents. Lin has confirmed that this lawlessness eventually led to Han becoming friends with Dominic Toretto in the FF universe and joining "the family". Once Han became a fan favorite of the series, the chronology of the films was adjusted to allow Kang to have a larger role in future sequels.
Also interesting to note: Lin has also mentioned that his movie Annapolis, starring James Franco, is also overlaps with Better Luck Tomorrow -- and thus, Fast and Furious -- via the character Loo.
