9 Oddly Specific Things Zack Snyder Stole From The Original Superman Movies

9. Destroying Metropolis In A Fight With Zod

A problem with Man Of Steel so big that its sequel is devoting an entire subplot to correcting it was the wholesale destruction of Metropolis, with Superman's careless attempts to stop Zod causing enough collateral damage for a whole host of Marvel Civil Wars. Given how Smallville met a similar fate, The Big Apricot is seemingly just another victim of Zack Snyder's penchant for building smashes (let's not forget his increasing of Ozymandias' destruction by a factor of five in Watchmen), although it's hardly an unique occurence in Superman on film. In Superman II, Zod attacks The Daily Planet on Lex Luthor's suggestion in search of Superman, who dutifully turns up to help his chums, leading to a clash that takes the duo across the city, including a building site, through billboards and mass power clashes on the street - noticing the similarities yet? It's not as overblown as what we saw in 2013, but the structure is oddly similar. The only major difference (bar iffy practical effects being replaced by iffy CGI) is Superman's key motivation. Throughout the Donner/Lester film he's constantly pleading with Zod to think of the innocent civilians; in Snyder's he'll let buildings fall without a care, to the tune of "dozens killed". Wait, only dozens?
