4. A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The song: ''Singin' in the Rain'' by Gene Kelly Not content with ruining the good name of ''our old friend Ludwig Van'', Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) and his droogs turn their kohl-dashed eye to an indisputable classic; a staple of the screen and stage. After falsely claiming that there has been an accident outside, they break into a manor house and begin to torment the inhabitants in the cruellest way imaginable. The woman is groped and passed across the group's shoulders while her elderly husband is kicked to the floor. As Alex continues to swing his boot into the man's stomach, he bursts into a cheery rendition of 'Singin' in the Rain' before taking a pair of scissors and cutting circles out of the woman's clothes to expose her breasts and crotch. Watching a couple get attacked by a group wearing jackboots and phallic masks is indeed disturbing, but what makes the scene especially hard to bear is the fact that its director, Stanley Kubrick, felt compelled to ban the film following a spate of copycat killings. Along with the costume, it is alleged that the song was also imitated in these real-life crimes.
