9 Predictions By Sci-Fi Movies That Eerily Came True
5. Gesture-Based Tech (Minority Report)
Minority Report has an impressive track record when it comes to future tech predictions: personalised advertising? Yep, we have that. Facial recognition? Absolutely. Psychics capable of predicting crimes before they happen? Well, not exactly, but its forecasts are impressive nonetheless.
Perhaps its most astute prediction concerns its depiction of a gesture-based interface long before everyone and their dog owned a touchscreen smartphone. There are scenes where Tom Cruise's Captain John Anderton is seen manipulating images on a computer display using exaggerated hand motions.
Okay, so nobody uses their tablet or smartphone quite like that, but Cruise can be seen carrying out pinch-to-zoom commands and motion gestures, the latter of which foreshadows advancements in the gaming field, such as Microsoft's Kinect.
While most sci-fi movies don't set out to predict the future, Minority Report director Steven Spielberg did, enlisting the help of industrial designers, futurists and advertising experts to help him paint an authentic picture of what might lie ahead.
