9 Problems A Jason Bourne Sequel Must Avoid
4. A Potentially Great Villain Is Wasted
One of the better ideas trying to get your attention through all the bad ones is the back story of Vincent Cassel's CIA Asset. His cover blown thanks to Bourne's actions in Ultimatum, Cassel is kidnapped and tortured for two years and so, understandably, holds something of a grudge. After the mostly faceless assets from the previous film one with a personal tie to Bourne has a lot of untapped potential. Unfortunately this potential is squandered almost instantly.
Instead of a villain with shades of grey, the Asset is a cardboard cut out ruthlessly firing into crowds of people just to use up bullets.
How about instead crafting an antihero, not unlike Bourne, using his pretty reasonable vendetta as a jumping off point. We could have had our original hero being chased by a new hero and maybe even going on to have his own adventures. On second thoughts that's a terrible idea, I mean, studios hate spin-offs and such, don't they? What's that? They love them? Oh... well probably should have done that then, eh?
The development of the Asset is the whole film in a microcosm, casting a great actor and sprinkling on some potentially great ideas but just doing nothing with them. It really is a half job, and now he's dead anyway so that's settled.
