9 Reasons The Visit Is M Night Shyamalan's Comeback

6. There Are Tons Of Red Herrings

The trailers made the film seem like a pretty open-and-shut case as far as the plot was concerned, but the full movie thankfully has a little more to it than that. Shyamalan knows what audiences are expecting and deliberately goes about subverting this, throwing out a ton of red herrings to keep viewers on their toes. The first half of the movie in particular appears to set up a lot of potential pay-offs, making note of the grandparents' basement and implying a supernatural tone that's all part of Shyamalan's plan to surprise the audience when the resolution is in fact something completely different. Without saying what happens, Shyamalan clearly relishes screwing with the audience via the art of misdirection, and he does a terrific job of it here. It's a movie that keeps you guessing as it constantly throws off the expected.
