9 Reasons The Visit Is M Night Shyamalan's Comeback

5. It's His Most Disturbing Film By Far

Shyamalan may have made movies about children who can see dead people and plants that make people commit suicide, but with The Visit he's made easily his most WTF movie to date, which given the PG-13 rating is impressive stuff. The movie is a slow-build to start, beginning with vaguely unsettling scenes of the grandparents acting suspiciously, but by the end of the movie, there's been vomiting, dirty diapers shoved in faces and a bunch of murders. Again, it's a credit to Dunagan above all others, as she does a terrific job leaning into the physical creepiness of her role, and then of course switching back to her pleasant grandma demeanor. It may not have the most intricate or nuanced plot of Shyamalan's movies, but despite the frequently comic tone, there are some deeply disturbing implications throughout, all the more so once the inevitable twist has been revealed.
