9 Movie Sequels That Made You Hate Characters You Once Loved

8. Captain Jack Sparrow - Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

You probably forgot that you once adored this character - that the Jack Sparrow of Curse Of The Black Pearl, the first and only good entry in the Pirates franchise, was responsible for making Johnny Depp the biggest movie star in the world. Channelling Keith Richards, Depp - mysterious, flamboyant, prone to doing whatever he needed to do to get out of a scrape - created a Hollywood icon and helped make pirates cool again.

When Dead Man's Chest rolled around, though... well, Sparrow might have looked the same, but he sure as hell didn't act the same. Bumped up to main protagonist, Sparrow's whole personality was tweaked to make him more a "relatable" central character - i.e. more comical. The mystery factor faded, and he was prodded into an unnecessary love triangle that made him into more of a d*ck than a hero.

Jack's reputation never really recovered, and Sparrow now stands as the definitive example of a character whose insane popularity eventually led to everybody turning on him when Disney failed to get him right in the sequels.
