9 Shark Movies To Prepare Audiences For The Meg

Last summer's big-screen shark-fest had an admirable plot going for it.

Two people, stuck in a cage underwater (47 meters under, to be precise) and surrounded by some sharks. It isn't the most original idea in the world but it is certainly rife with possibilities. Sadly, the end product gets plagued down by following the formula for these things a bit too closely.

To stretch the film out to feature length, the story essentially turns into a loop of one of the two characters attempting to leave the cage and escape, only to get chased back to the cage by a shark. This happens not once, not twice, but five times over the course of the film. Five.

It takes what should have been an incredibly easy-to-capitalize-on premise and filters it through the dreck and garbage of the worst horror films, resulting in a film that produces way more groaning than shrieking from its audience. With that in mind, The Meg looks to have an extended sequence rooted heavily in a similar premise.

The opening of the trailer features its characters in an underwater-base, surrounded by the Meg, trapped with it as it chomps onto the glass. There's even another sequence that features a giant squid-like creature crushing a submarine, and seemingly leaving the characters stranded in the depths.

Watch 47 Meters Down to get a feel for exactly how these sequences can/will be set up in the film. Hopefully, Statham and crew will be a bit more active and a lot less passive when they get stuck in the murky depths.
