5. Remove The Weird Thor Cave Sequence
Probably the most confusing sequence in the entire movie is the one where Thor suddenly decides to shoot off from Hawkeye's cabin, find Dr Erik Selvig, and then head to some weird old cave type of place. It's not just that it's quite a blatant setup for the future, because it's worse than those scenes already mentioned. It really takes you out of the film, and basically just has you wondering what is going on. Why does Thor need Dr Selvig? Did he really think wearing a hoodie was a passable disguise? Why does he need to go into that water and have some weird vision? There's some rapid exposition from Thor about the purpose of it - the blink-and-you'll-miss-'em Infinity Stones - but it still doesn't really make any sense. The scene is one that Joss Whedon didn't want to include, but the producers were adamant it had to, although some changes were made - the original version tied more into Norse mythology, with Thor possessed by Norns (beings who control destiny) and answering questions Selvig asks him. That may have made slightly more sense, but would still be more at home in a Thor film than an Avengers one. You can figure out the Infinity Gems link without the cave scene, and wouldn't have to sit feeling confused by the sight of Chris Hemsworth in a pool of water.
