9 Spicy Films That Define The New French Extremity

8. Trouble Every Day (2001)

trouble everyday A film that is often critically reviled, but I admire it for its fresh take on the subject of cannibalism - Trouble Every Day is another hard to sit through film. Vincent Gallo stars as Shane, a newly wed who is in France looking for his college friend. They participated in some experiments in their college days which has left them with cannibalistic urges. Shane can suppress his urges but his friend Core (Beatrice Dalle) has to be locked up in her residence to prevent her from going into a cannibal frenzy. Eventually Core escapes and scenes of graphic cannibalism are the flavour of the day. Claire Denis' film is not for everyone. Apparently it caused mass walk outs and fainting spells from the viewers at Cannes. The gory scenes are very graphic and they stick in your head. I think that the film is well paced and builds up a lot of tension. Gallo gives a good performance full of neurosis while Dalle does her customary 'unhinged' performance with gusto. I think it is a quasi-believable treatment of cannibalism, which is not outrageously out of the ball park and handles the subject with a deft touch.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
