9 Spicy Films That Define The New French Extremity

3. Baise Moi (2000)

base moi Literally translated "Rape Me" or "F**k Me", you can tell from the title that this film is going to be a pure attack upon our sensibilities. It follows the tale of Nadine (Karen Lancaume) and Manu (Rafaella Anderson) two highly disaffected young women who go on a sex and murder spree. With lots of hard core porn bits liberally strewn across the film. Yes, it is basically an ultraviolent and hard core porn Thelma and Louise type of story. Manu is brutally gang raped and she shoots her brother dead after he calls her a slut for 'enjoying' it. On Nadine's side of the fence, she strangles her house mate to death after an argument. Manu and Nadine meet up at a train station. Manu supplies a car for Nadine and they go on the rampage over France - killing and robbing indiscriminately. The public are split 50/50 between admiration and fear. Like for all unrepentant killers, things do got go well for our intrepid duo who are eventually subdued by the law. A film which made the BBFC have kittens, it was initially banned and then went under the knife for scenes of sexual violence - which were apparently 'eroticised'. I personally do not find anything erotic about the sex scenes. They are very graphic but they fit in well with the story - which is one of violence and depravity. The film blends hardcore porn with its storyline seamlessly. It is a film made by women, about women and this could account for its cinema verite feel - almost like a documentary that just happens to feature hardcore porn, not a film that uses pornography in a prurient manner.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
