No war film ever has, or perhaps ever will make an entrance quite like Saving Private Ryan. One of the finest portrayals of war ever committed to film, Saving Private Ryan is remembered as a classic, mainly for its raw and authentic portrayal of combat. Depicting the beginning of the battle for Omaha Beach, on June 6th, 1944, and noted for its accuracy by war veterans who fought in the battle themselves, the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan comes in like a wrecking ball.

Providing an unflinching account of the assault by the first men on the beach, it was a masterclass in film-making, putting the viewer quite literally on the head and shoulders of a man wading his way through the surf amongst the murderous gun and shell fire. As the viewer seems to battle up the beach alongside Tom Hanks, the stunning cinematography and sound design did a brilliant job of putting us right there with him, and there is no forgetting it.

The date of June 6th, 1944 may be fading further and further away, but no one will ever forget the finer details and events of that day after watching the opening scene to this blockbuster.
