9 Stunning Opening Movie Scenes That Hooked You Immediately

7. Blade Runner

Blade Runner Opening Scene
Warner Bros.

One of the greatest and most original science fiction films of all time, Blade Runner blew people away when it was released in 1982. With revolutionary special effects, a world of magnificent originality and conceptual brilliance, it threw science fiction films into a black hole and spat them out, bringing them forward into a new era.

Often celebrated for its immersive, ethereal, epic scope and world, this noir sci-fi sets its tone up right from the start. As 'Vangelis', one of the most iconic scores of all time slowly fades in, pulsating the opening titles forward, we are welcomed to cyberpunk Los Angeles. An urban landscape stretches to the distance, the city skyline illuminated by neon lights and streaks of flame emitted by the rooftops.

Ridley Scott brings us forward into a new age, one of mass urban domination and technological revolution. His command of atmosphere as Deckard's vehicle cruises through the sky leaves us in awe, and we cannot look away.

As the replicant eye stares us down and grapples our attention, we stare back, and the stunning visual effects swallow us into the beautiful dystopian world. We are immersed enough to put aside the popcorn, turn up the volume and enter the world of Blade Runner as enthusiastically as the Replicants did.
