9 Superhero Movies That (Unfortunately) Didn't Get Made

1. Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman

By now it's been highly documented across the internet that DC dropped the ball by not following through on the Wonder Woman script handed to them by Joss Whedon. As we all know, Whedon went on to make The Avengers for Marvel Studios, which grossed $1.5 billion worldwide, and will soon be helming the sequel, Age of Ultron, slated for a summer 2015 release. Legendary producer Joel Silver (The Matrix, Die Hard) was brought on to produce, and Whedon was brought on to write and direct. Whedon was, without a doubt, the perfect candidate for the job, because he has a knack for creating larger-than-life feminist icons in subversive and entertaining ways. Wonder Woman is a character who is incredibly hard to adapt, not only because of what she stands for but because of a highly complicated origin story that has gone through several major iterations since her debut in 1941. Whedon has spoken in several interviews about his script and his frustrations with having to leave the project, and had this to say about his interpretation:
She was a little bit like Angelina Jolie . She sort of traveled the world. She was very powerful and very naïve about people, and the fact that she was a goddess was how I eventually found my in to her humanity and vulnerability, because she would look at us and the way we kill each other and the way we let people starve and the way the world is run and she'd just be like, 'None of this makes sense to me. I can't cope with it, I can't understand, people are insane.' And ultimately her romance with was about him getting her to see what it's like not to be a goddess, what it's like when you are weak, when you do have all these forces controlling you and there's nothing you can do about it. That was the sort of central concept of the thing. Him teaching her humanity and her saying, OK, great, but we can still do better."
There's no clear answer as to why the project fell off the rails, though many have cited WB's hesitation with creating a tentpole project featuring a female lead. The time has undoubtedly come for studio execs to get a grip and trust that a character like Wonder Woman, in the right hands, could be a smash hit and finally prove that superheroines belong on the big screen too. If recent stirrings prove true, fans may actually get what they've been waiting for. And there we have it! My list of 7 superhero films that (unfortunately) never got made. What did you think of the list? And what films have you heard about over the years that never made it to the screen that you would like to see? Let us know in the comments below!
