9 Terrifying Movie Rednecks You Never Want To Meet In The Woods
7. Aileen Wuornos - Monster (2003)
The beautiful Charlize Theron undergoes a dramatic transformation to play notorious redneck serial killer - Aileen Wuornos. She meets and falls in love with a girl named Selby in a gay bar. Aileen is a prostitute and after being raped by a John, she kills him. Selby moans that Aileen doesn't do enough to support her, but Wuornos has no skills, education or experience to land a job. She has to return to prostitution. This time she kills the johns and takes their money - treating Selby to fancy meals and a good time. Things go pear shaped when Selby gleans from a newspaper article that Aileen is killing a string of men. She quickly jumps on a bus to Ohio and leaves Aileen behind to be caught for the crimes. Aileen Wuornos is an interesting character both on the screen and in real life. She came from a bona fide redneck background with child abuse, little to no education, poverty and hardships. I'm not trying trying to defend what she did but to understand it, after all there are not many female serial killers out there. Charlize Theron did an incredible job with her role as Wuornos and really deserved the Oscar - portraying Aileen not just as a 'monster' but as a human being. The film also raises questions about the death penalty. Judging by this film and Nick Broomfield's documentary on Wuornos, the woman was clearly mentally ill, rambling from topic to topic, ranting and displaying signs of paranoid psychosis. She was trapped in her environment - a sleazy redneck environment, and she didn't have the help, resources or knowledge to overcome this state of affairs. Thus the situation descended into murder, making Aileen Wuornos one of the worst scary rednecks in both the screen and real life.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
