9 Times Actors Famously Expressed Their Dissatisfaction
1. Jeremy Piven - PCU
PCU seemed destined to be the '90s Animal House, long before Van Wilder re-introduced college to the teen sex comedy to a new generation, but its ultimate mediocrity turned it into a cult favourite at best. There are some genuinely funny bits, like the stoner grad student whose thesis is that at any given point, you can find a movie on TV featuring either Michael Caine or Gene Hackman, but the film doesn't just doesn't land its premise.
Part of the film's problem is the set-up, which finds a high school student auditing differing fraternities for an afternoon. It unnecessarily sets up an audience identification character to walk you through the film's overly politically sensitive student body, treating the entire cast like aliens rather than heroes rebelling against a stuffy system.
The reason, according to star Jeremy Piven, was director Hart "Ellis from Die Hard actually is a d*ck" Bochner refused any improvisation on set from a cast the featured Piven, Jon Favreau, David Spade and the Parliament Funkadelic - not exactly a crew known for sticking to the script.
Piven's DVD commentary is one of the most depressing ever recorded, as he desperately tries to stay positive but can't betray himself for long. In the saddest moment, he relishes his character telling Jon Favreau to not "be that guy" wearing the band's t-shirt at their concert - the only improved line Bochner didn't cut.
