9 Times Authors Disavowed Adaptations Of Their Work

8. Max Brooks - World War Z

During the weeks leading up to the release of World War Z, author Max Brooks chose to disavow the adaptation for diverting so heavily away from the novel. He went so far as to say that the two stories shared nothing except for a name.

His ire is understandable, as it appears filmmakers were more inclined to use the zombie universe previously established by Brooks. The book was compiled from many different accounts of the apocalypse, across all corners of the globe. However, the adaptation preferred to follow one character, while keeping the same changing geography of its source.

In this sense, World War Z wasn't truly drawn from the novel, instead preferring to address the mere concept in the same vein as Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

This little story comes with a happy ending, as Brooks later softened his views after seeing the movie. He has said that he can enjoy the film if he considers it a different body of work, instead of coming from his pages.

I wrote two books and a few articles. They're probably okay.
