9 Times Authors Disavowed Adaptations Of Their Work

2. Stephen King - The Shining

Stephen King's literary catalog is as vast as he is famous, so it's only natural that he dislikes a few. He thinks Children of the Corn turned his work into a mere slasher flick and loathes both remakes of Carrie because he thinks they disrespect the original film. Surprisingly, he doesn't even like the book that much.

But King especially hated The Shining, as he has stated that it butchers the subtlety and nuance of his novel. It ignores the themes of the deconstruction of the family unit, or the weight of alcoholism, which King believed was vital to the fabric of the story.

Not only that, but King has called the depiction of Shelley misogynistic to the extreme, and panned the casting of Jack Nicholson as Jack because it made him too obviously menacing. King has reconciled with The Shining over the years, but only as a fine example of horror, and not as an adaptation of his book.

I wrote two books and a few articles. They're probably okay.
