9 Times You Had To Be Tricked Into Seeing Great Movies
9. Hereditary
Though it's regarded as a modern horror classic now, Hereditary caused a bit of a stir when it released in 2018, due to how it manipulated its trailers to sell viewers a completely different movie.
That's particularly impressive considering that, for the most part (bar a shot here and there) everything from the trailers made it into the final cut. It's just the footage was pieced together in the trailers in a way that set up an entirely different narrative.
Focusing on thirteen-year-old Charlie, the pre-release ads seemingly established her as either the hero or villain, with her ominous clicking becoming a terrifying motif, and the entire movie apparently being about the battle for her soul.
That's how the movie starts as well, but the character is only in the film for about half an hour before being killed off, with the story then shifting to focus on the family drama happening in response to the death as much as the ghostly scares.
This misdirection allowed for one of the most impactful horror twists ever, and a story that was genuinely unpredictable.
