9 Under-rated Horror Masterpieces By Directors You Love
2. Lost Highway
Again, you've seen the classics: Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man. David Lynch has made some of the most unsettling movies going, very often blurring genres to create singular, incomparable films with distinctively haunting atmospheres.
This deep cut from Lynch’s back catalogue, however, is an absolute peach. Its heady mix of horror and film noir is worth seeing for the party scene alone, which is one of Lynch’s creepiest accomplishments.
Sometimes it's written off as an unsatisfying first draft of his much later Mulholland Drive. But that's not fair: Lost Highway is a knotty, fascinating masterpiece that sinks its teeth deep into your subconscious. It's a seductive slowburner that reworks classic noir themes of double identities, guilt, attraction, and crime.
But there's more: it also has a fantastic soundtrack of 90s alt-rock, featuring The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, and Marilyn Manson. Old Mazza also features in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo, as do Twiggy Ramirez and Henry Rollins. Lost Highway is a real smorgasbord of treats and surprises. Get it watched.
