9 Underrated Kid's Movies You Didn't Realise Were Awesome

3. The Road To El Dorado (2000)

Tulio and Miguel are con men in 16th century Spain. By a series of chance mistakes and accidents, they wind up in the New World with a map supposedly leading to the fabled El Dorado. When they manage to find it, they are mistaken for gods and undertake a new con to take as much gold as they can and get back to Spain. Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 49% Why It's Actually Awesome: How this movie bombed at the box office is a complete and total mystery. Miguel and Tulio are voiced by Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline respectively, and the banter between the two is hilarious. The Road to El Dorado is the ultimate bromance, and the two characters play off of each other perfectly, filling the dialogue with quips, one-liners, sarcasm, and jokes. The film is visually gorgeous, with bright colours, fantastical scenery, and dazzling animation. It has one of the best soundtracks on this list, as it was performed by Elton John. The movie also features a duet by Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh which is both funny and fantastic. The Road to El Dorado walks the line between being a movie for kids or for adults, as it features implied sexuality, nudity, and human sacrifice. The villain, the high priest of El Dorado, is straight up terrifying, as he has actual mystical powers that he uses to attack the city. Rosie Perez is also brilliant as the voice of Chel, a native of the city who is in on Tulio and Miguel's con. It is incredibly clever and humorous, with Kline and Branagh delivering brilliant performances reminiscent of a theatrical farce, perhaps not surprising given both Kline and Branagh's history in the medium. It's simply a quality film.
