9 Underrated Kid's Movies You Didn't Realise Were Awesome

2. The Swan Princess (1994)

The Swan Princess is based on the ballet Swan Lake. Princess Odette and Prince Derek are betrothed as children, but only fall in love when they are adults. But after being insulted by Derek, Odette breaks the betrothal and leaves, only to be captured and turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. Derek must find Odette and save her before the sorcerer can force her to marry him, giving him control of Odette's kingdom. Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 44% Why It's Actually Awesome: Where to even start with this film? First, Odette is the best princess. She and Derek don't just meet and fall in love within a couple days like in most fairy tales; they've known each other from childhood and have been forced to spend every summer with each other. When they do fall in love and Derek high-handedly demands their marriage be arranged, Odette stops him and asks why he wants to marry her. After telling her that it's for her beauty alone, Odette actually calls off the betrothal and leaves him. Can we just stop right here and appreciate how awesome that is? When has that ever happened in a fairy tale before? What an amazing message to send to kids; that your appearance isn't the only thing about you that matters. This film's soundtrack is the best on the list. Every single song is a hit, with most of them being witty, upbeat, and a ton of fun. They also go with really exciting and generally funny animation sequences that successfully serve to move the plot along. If that's not enough for you, consider this; The Swan Princess features John Cleese as the voice of a French frog who believes he's really a prince under a spell. That's right. John Cleese, faking a French accent for an ENTIRE movie. What more could you really ask for?
