9 Upcoming 2014 Movies That Are Most Likely To Catch Us By Surprise

9. Birdman

To this point, Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñáritu has made a name for himself helming unflinchingly bleak fare. The formula has worked thus far for him, even earning him an Oscar nomination for directing Babel in the process. So color us surprised at the outset to hear that his next project would be a superhero comedy. Centering on a washed up T.V. actor trying to revive his iconic, titular superhero character on Broadway, the film features Edward Norton and Emma Stone heading a cast that also includes Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts, Amy Ryan, and even Zach Galifinakis. While there is every indication that the film could turn out to be a train wreck (and gut feeling tells me it very well could be), the pedigree involved will certainly insure that it€™ll at least be interesting. And if Iñáritu is as funny as he is depressing, we could be looking at a genuine cult classic in the making.
