9 Upcoming Movies Studios Have No Confidence In
2. Grudge
The Movie
A reboot of the English-language The Grudge franchise, adapted of course from the classic Japanese horror series.
The cast includes the surprisingly distinguished Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye, Betty Gilpin, and Jacki Weaver, while intriguing on-the-rise filmmaker Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother, Piercing) co-writes and directs.
What's Wrong?
Though the horror genre is notoriously critic-proof and there's still a solid enough chance that this low-budget reboot turns a profit, it doesn't say much for its quality - or Sony's faith in it - that the film wrapped shooting last June and won't hit cinemas until January 3 of next year.
Grudge was originally pencilled in to release this August, so delaying it almost six months into the "movie graveyard" of January is a pretty awful sign.
Generally, fast-and-loose horror films like this can be shot and released in well under a year, and so the uncommonly long gestation period proves rather reminiscent of 2017's Rings, which languished in post-production for almost two years before releasing to universal critical disdain.
Again, Grudge will probably be profitable given its low budget and well-recognised brand, but Sony likely won't be doing much marketing for it ahead of its January drop.
