9 Upcoming Movies That Sound Cool (But Will Probably Suck)
Is it time to finally call it quits on Terminator?
We've all been burned by putting our faith in movie hype. Getting swept up in projects that sound amazing on paper, whether they're long-awaited follow ups to iconic properties or original ideas that seem incredible, it's easy to throw caution to the wind, ignore all the warning signs and get excited.
However, blind optimism more often than not leads only to despair, and if awesome-sounding films like Suicide Squad, The Cloverfield Paradox and, according to the Internet, any Star Wars movie that came out after 2005 have taught moviegoers anything, it's that tempered expectation are often key to not having to fire angrily into comments sections come a hyped movie's opening weekend.
Consequently, looking forward to 2019 and beyond, there are plenty of films slated to hit theatres that sound like they have everything going for them on paper but, being realistic, could totally suck if even one element falls short.
9. Alita: Battle Angel
In development for well over a decade, Alita: Battle Angel was originally James Cameron's pet project. After acquiring the rights, the director constantly reiterated his desire to adapt the material over the years, but kept pushing it in favour of Avatar as well as his environmental work. Fans kept hope alive though, as if anyone could do justice to source material all about kick-ass cyberpunk killer robots, it was him.
Unfortunately, after a decade of putting it off, Cameron eventually conceded that he'd probably never get round to doing it himself, and drafted in Robert Rodriguez to helm the project instead. Primed to release on Valentine's Day 2019, there's been surprisingly little fanfare surrounding the flick, made worse by two trailers which, while not terrible, have certainly looked a little... off.
And no, that's not only in reference to the anime-esque CGI heaped onto actor Rosa Salazar, but the way that the whole film feels five years out of date. The concept is amazing, but the marketing so far hasn't shown off anything particularly exciting, and it feels like the kind of film that would have bombed in 2011, never mind now.
