2. Tomb Raider
Huh? The
Tomb Raider series is one of the most iconic gaming franchises ever, one that has gone through what feels like a zillion incarnations since the first game debuted back in '97. Players control Lara Croft, a female Indiana Jones, who specializes in dodging deadly traps, ancient curses and wearing extremely tight shorts. In its most recent venture, Ubisoft attempted to make Lara less page 3 model and more "real human being." That's to say, they took her breast size down a good few notches and gave her a personality. Now Graham King of GK Films (he was a producer on
Argo and
The Departed) is putting together the necessary pieces to get another
Tomb Raider movie into theaters... one that (we hope) will channel the latest game in the series when it comes to aesthetics and Lara's personality.
Could It Work? It certainly could work, but it hasn't yet: the two Angelina Jolie
Raider movies are pretty naff, and stand as firm evidence as to why video games shouldn't be dragged kicking and screaming and shoehorned into another medium for the sake of it. That said, there's a lot of potential here to actually create a genuinely pulpy and fun Indiana Jones-type movie with a female lead. There's an endless amount of myths and legends out there to build a story around, after - GK just need to nail the right tone if this thing is ever gonna work, because it could so easily fall into the generic blockbuster category.
