9 Violent Mainstream Movie Scenes That Went Too Far

8. Alex Murphy Is Relentlessly Shot To A Pulp - RoboCop

RoboCop 1987 Alex Murphy Hand Shot Off
Columbia Pictures

Watching it now, the original Robocop plays as a strange breed of ultra-violent satire and cheesy, pulp fiction. For every scene of unnecessarily graphic dismemberment, there's a scene at Omnicorp that relies entirely on 80s catchphrases that absolutely do not stand the test of time. But the moment that instigates Alex Murphy's transformation into RoboCop still manages a level of revoltion that even the goriest of modern horror movies typically fail to achieve.

It's not the amount of blood, either. When the dad from That 70's Show first blows off Murphy's hand with a shotgun, it's not the sound or the blood splatter or even the casual laughter from the group that makes it stick. It's the look on Murphy's face. It's pure shock. It's fear and bewilderment and dread all rolled into one. It's some of the best acting in the film. But then it goes downhill. Fast.

The rest of the crew dismantles him piece by piece, first shooting off his arm, then putting a constant stream of shotgun shells through his traumatized body while he screams in agony, somehow staying on his feet to collect more and more bullets with his flesh. The barrage lasts for a painful 15 seconds.
