9 Violent Mainstream Movie Scenes That Went Too Far

9. The Diner Scene Just Can't Help Itself - A History Of Violence

There are moments of ultra-violence in David Cronenberg's film that are both justified and so, so satisfying to the audience's lizard brain. There are others that dwell on the violence seemingly for no other reason than "It's right there in the title, folks." Some scenes just flat out love how disturbing they are.

Take, for instance, the diner scene where we first learn that Viggo Mortensen is a Jason Bourne-esque badass despite his soft-spoken demeanor and Dorothy Hamill hairstyle. Two dipsh*ts try to rob his business, and when he complies, they randomly decide not to just take the money he's already offered them. Instead, they decide they're going to rape one of the waitresses. Why? 'Cause...violence, you guys!

This pushes Viggo into superhero mode, dispatching one bad guy with a coffee pot, and shooting the other several times until he crashes through a glass door. The first bad guy, not quite dead, stabs Viggo in the foot and he retaliates by shooting him in the face. All of which is awesome. But then, for no reason other than "Hey, what if we showed the guy's jaw-less face gurgling to death on his own blood?" they show the guy's jaw-less face gurgling to death on his own blood. One huge step too far, Cronenberg.
