9 Ways To Break Out Of A Time Loop (According To The Movies)
7. Kill David Morse (12 Monkeys)
In instances that you find yourself trapped in a time loop, only on very rare occasions should you kill David Morse. Unfortunately, 12 Monkeys is one example where ending Morse is a necessity in order to stop the madness, and it's up to James Cole (Bruce Willis), a convicted criminal sent back in time from a post-apocalyptic 2035 to 1996, the year a deadly virus almost wiped out the human race and sent survivors scurrying underground to live in Terry Gilliam's dream. Back in 1996, James discovers the culprit behind the outbreak is a psychotic scientist named Dr. Peters (David Morse), a man intent on decimating mankind for kicks or something. The tragedy at the heart of 12 Monkeys is that James seems forever destined to repeat things the same way as we see at both the beginning and end of the film, James draws a gun on Peters only to be killed by the police before getting the job done. If only James managed to successfully bring down Dr. Peters, his younger self would have more chance of growing up overground rather than in some subterranean nightmare-chamber, thereby closing the loop. Or, alternatively, James could just alert the authorities about the madman that's got a tube of nuclear-plague in his coat pocket, leaving the police to apprehend Peters in a less dramatic fashion and allowing James to survive. Either way works.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
