9 Ways To Break Out Of A Time Loop (According To The Movies)
6. Learn The Power Of Love (Groundhog Day)
There's no reason why Bill Murray's weatherman Phil Connors is forced to relive the same day ad infinitum in Groundhog Day, other than the fact that he's a complete jerk. Nonetheless, Phil spends his repeated Groundhog Days trapped in a small Pennsylvania town desperately trying to break out of the time loop fate has dumped him in. But after stealing money, seducing women and killing himself in all manner of inventive ways all surprisingly fail to help, Phil instead finds solace in producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and in using his time loop-attributable foresight to help others. As Groundhog Day is essentially a romantic comedy (albeit one with a genius high concept), Phil's life lesson in loving thy neighbour is what eventually breaks him out of the loop. Unlike most other time loop movies, no concrete explanation is ever given for why or how Phil finds himself in this circular predicament. But, if you're ever looking to break out of a maddening time loop and you're all out of science options, remember that the love of a good woman worked for Bill Murray.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
