9 Worst Billion Dollar Movies

4. Avatar

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom T Rex
20th Century Fox

Ranking: #1

Worldwide Earnings: $2,787,965,087

The highest grossing film ever with a $600-million lead over second place movie Titanic, Avatar drew us all in since it promised - and delivered - a cinematic spectacle unlike anything else ever filmed. After conquering the world, everyone turned on it, just like with Titanic 12 years earlier, but this time the backlash is entirely justified.

Avatar doesn't really work as a movie. It's a huge shame since the special effects are amazing and there are some interesting themes lurking in there, so this movie did have plenty of potential, but it is unfortunately a failure. It's a noble failure, but it's still a failure.

Boasting a bland plot, a clunky script and a terrible lead performance from Sam Worthington, not to mention a ridiculously bloated length, Avatar simply doesn't hold up on a smaller screen at all. It is almost impossible to find anyone who actually likes this movie nowadays and that's hardly surprising. To be honest, when James Cameron does finally release those Avatar sequels he's currently wasting a decade of his life on (just think what other projects he could've been doing instead), it's quite likely they'll under-perform at the box office.
