A History of Horribly Haunted Objects in Horror Films

The EVIL Book

There used to be these silly impractical contraptions made of hundreds of thin wood slices, bound together to create a physical, limited document of information that aged poorly and could never be updated. They called them books. They could also possess the living. For your consideration of the most famous haunted book capable of inducing mass possession with brutally bloody consequences, I submit to you the necronomicon from Sam Raimi€™s Evil Dead films. It€™s mean, it€™s nasty, and it has certainly has endured. Books are perfect objects for creating believable possession because they not only have history, they have ancient history. They€™ve been around mankind for so long, collecting our secrets, documenting our darkest desires, why shouldn€™t they bee haunted? Before we leave the topic of books, here€™s an obligatory shout out to Hocus Pocus for any Bette Midler fans that might be reading this.

I have a keen, almost obsessive fascination with the macabre. It has lead me from a quiet life growing up in a small town to where I am now; creating horrific works about horrific things in many different mediums including films, short stories and essays. I live life by a simple motto: learn to like the dark, cause eventually, it'll come for all of us (lightening flashes and thunder claps)... but it ain't so bad.
