A Star Is Born Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

1. The Emotionally Devastating Third Act

A Star Is Born Bradley Cooper Lady Gaga
Warner Bros.

If you've seen any of the prior versions of this story, you'll know that it ends on a heartbreaking note, and Cooper does a fantastic job delivering arguably the most affecting finale from any of the iterations to date.

Tying together Jackson and Ally's relationship, Jackson's substance abuse issues and Ally's rise to fame, the climax is a work of impeccable tonal balance, going to some incredibly unsettling places but still finding hope in the power of music and the human spirit.

It's an ending which bolsters the movie as great rather than merely very good, committing firmly to the darker aspects of the original story and refusing to scale things back for commercial reasons as you might've expected.

Needless to say, you might wanna bring tissues to this one.
