2. Lady Gaga's Too Attractive To Be A "Plain Jane"
A small but undeniable nitpick about the movie is the decision to make Lady Gaga's protagonist Ally a "plain" woman who has been rejected countless times by music executives for not being pretty enough.
While to a point this feels tied to the movie's commentary about the superficiality of the pop music industry, not to mention Ally's own low self-esteem, it's also clear Ally's supposed to be incredibly average-looking.
This is, of course, completely comical, and while it's thankfully not a point the movie labours too much, it's still a bit of a groaner that an obviously conventionally attractive woman is supposed to be "just OK" in the eyes of the viewer.
