A Wrinkle In Time Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs
Diversity can't save bad storytelling.
A Wrinkle in Time is out now in UK cinemas, and arriving some two weeks after its state-side release, it's fair to say British audiences have been let down easy, with Disney's latest live-action fantasy flick already bombing with critics and cratering at the box office.
To describe A Wrinkle in Time in just one word: it's a disappointment. There was so much potential for the Ava DuVernay-directed adventure film to be another well-crafted celebration of diversity, but due to a litany of production issues running rife throughout, it's largely just a tedious - if good-looking - dud.
It's an ambitious swing and a miss, at least, and a reminder that even with all the good will, talent and visual aplomb in the world, you can't paper over a bad script, flat direction and some questionable acting.
Nobody involved should hurt massively from this, but at the same time, it's surprising so many skilled artists signed on for a project that clearly needed much more time in the oven...
