Adam Sandler: 5 Awesome Performances and 5 That Sucked

2. Funny People (2009)

Despite receiving mixed reviews upon its release, I actually though Funny People represented one of Sandler€™s greatest performances to date. While it is a Judd Apatow movie and features healthy doses of the rude humour you€™ve come to expect from both he and Sandler, it€™s also surprisingly deep in its subject matter and flat out relies on Sandler for much of the emotional weight. Didn€™t see that coming did you? While Funny People boasts a stellar comedic cast (including Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Leslie Mann), it€™s Sandler who really shines as Geroge Simmons, the behemothic comedian who€™s knocking on death€™s door. He brings a sense of deep sadness, of nihilism to the role and he does it so well that €“ when you also factor in the comedic requirements of the part - I€™m convinced even an Oscar winner couldn€™t have done a better job.
