Adrian Mole: Casting A Movie Adaptation

Nicholas Hoult as Brett Mole

Who Is He? Born in the second book, Adrian€™s illegitimate half brother (by his father) Brett grows up to be everything Adrian ever wanted to be: rich and successful at a young age with a playboy lifestyle made possible by his hugely successful career in finance. Until the 2008 recession hits him and he loses everything, forcing him to move in with Adrian€™s parents. The Prostrate Years also foreshadows further financial troubles as Adrian casually mentions Brett convincing him to invest his life insurance in a fail-safe Icelandic opportunity. Why Nicholas Hoult? Although Hoult€™s a good actor with a career that€™s firmly on the up after a supporting role in X-Men: First Class, I remember him best as Tony Stonem in Skins, a character who€™s flashy and arrogant and does things at the expense of others. Which is exactly how I€™ve always thought of Brett. There are vast differences between Brett and Tony but it€™s a broadly similar character type. Additionally, the change in Brett€™s character to incompetent sponger during the recession would be a good test of Hoult€™s talents.

Jack O€™Connell as Glenn Mole

001Who Is He? Adrian€™s first child who was born when Adrian was in his late teens and who discovers Adrian is his father in The Cappuccino Years. A surprisingly multi-layered character who€™s sometimes portrayed as a good-natured dunce, not knowing why he€™s fighting in Afghanistan but is shown to be very protective of his family, squaring up to his mother€™s abusive boyfriend and threatening to beat up Hugo Fairfax-Lycett after Daisy€™s affair. Why Jack O€™Connell I€™ll be honest: I€™ve only seen Jack O€™Connell in Skins but his performance always greatly impressed me and other reviews heap praise on his acting, particularly his very naturalistic style. Also, as with Isy Suttie, I just think that he€™d physically fit the role.
