Age of Ultron: 8 Ways The Avengers' Quicksilver Beats X-Men's
2. The Inclusion Of Scarlet Witch
In Age of Ultron, one doesn’t often see or hear of Quicksilver without Scarlet Witch, something that has carried over from the comics where the Maximoff twins’ stories would often be inextricably linked. Neither Quicksilver had a great deal of room to breathe in their respective films, featuring as supporting players at best. With Wanda thrown into the mix along with Pietro in Age of Ultron, the twins’ immediate close bond (shown in literally the first shot of the movie) gives an instantaneous dimension to both characters.
The strong suit of Marvel movies has always been the sometimes tenuous, sometimes profound relationships between their characters; the Maximoffs are no exception, their closeness bringing out their motivations as well as their hearts for the audience to see, as we easily sense that they only have each other. Without Wanda in Days of Future Past, all of this is lost to Peter Maximoff, who doesn’t even appear to have a twin sister. Furthermore, against Scarlet Witch, we see more of Quicksilver brought out purely through juxtaposition: the hotheaded, frustrated Pietro is stark against the more grounded, thoughtful Wanda.
Essentially, with Whedon’s writing of the twins, and the inclusion of Wanda, a viewer can sense a certain respect for the two characters and their story, however short in the movie, that wasn’t necessarily present in X-Men’s version.
