3. Capt. George Ellerby - The Departed
Before Marty Scorsese gave Internal Affairs some bombastic Boston treatment, the view of a Massachusetts police captain would have gone a little something like this: a harsh, no nonsense boss with a docker's mouth. Baldwin took this archetype and did something pretty great with Ellerby, carving out a small yet memorable role in a picture bustling with strong performances. His grandstanding moment will always be his brutal call to arms but the most memorable has to be his scenes with Staff Sgt. Sean Dignam (Mark Wahlberg on Oscar-baiting form), where he plays goodish cop to Wahlberg's meaner than mean true blue.
