Alex: I was so excited when Wolverine was confirmed in X-Men: Apocalypse, not just because Wolverine is awesome, but because it was a side-swipe for a film Id pretty much figured out the plot of from the trailers. How was he going to fit in?

Turns out it was in a shoehorned sequence that has no bearing on the plot at all; aside from providing the X-Men with a plane and the opportunity to catch up with the one-track Apocalypse.

There is some cool stuff in the sequence; getting proper berserker rage Logan was cool, as were the links to the memories he has in X-2, and I also thought having Jean free him and return him some vague memories was a nice use of the new timeline. But thats not enough. People in my screening kept squeeing during the sequence, but I just dont see why; it was a toothless scene (the PG-13 cutting was very obvious) and wasted one of the coolest possibilities of the new timeline (Ive mentioned it already, but I was really hoping for some pay-off of Mystique as Stryker).

Simon: Look, I'm absolutely no fan of the Wolverine stand-alones. I love the character, I love the performance and I love some of the ideas, but I'm still waiting for a proper Wolverine movie, and this sequence was exactly what I was waiting for.

Sure, it doesn't really fit the narrative, BUT it does fit the idea of cameos having an atonal feel to the rest of the film (as in DoFP), and berserker Wolverine is the kind of currency I can get on board with no matter what.

It was a little dumb (in the missing link between the end of DoFP and this, and the fact that they keep Weapon X in the generator room), but it was gloriously cartoonish. And that's what I want from X-Men movies.
