And now that we've run down why Alita categorically doesn't work, it's time to consider the biggest test of the movie's staying power: its box office.

No matter the mixed-positive reviews, all that really matters to Fox is the bottom line, and it's no secret that Alita has been a tough commercial sell ever since it was first announced.

Recent industry tracking suggests that Alita is in for bad time at the domestic box office, and its global success is expected to live or die by its performance in China.

While it's possible that the film ends up outpacing low-ball expectations, the $200 million tentpole needs to gross north of $500 million to be profitable, and with it unlikely to hit that figure, the odds of Alita becoming a franchise are immensely slim.

Stranger things have happened than a movie like Alita becoming a surprise success, but the early number-crunching is not good at all.
