All Of Christian Bale's Most Unbelievable Movie Transformations - Ranked

1. The Machinist (2004)

2004's The Machinist represents the most drastic change Bale put his body through for a role. He lost 63 pounds (28.5 kg) to play insomniac Trevor Reznik. He dropped to just 120 lbs (54.4 kg) of total body weight by coming up with the incredibly dangerous, yet “absolutely brilliant method of just smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey to lose weight.”

Bale's weight loss for the role did more than merely shed some pounds. He managed to maintain some muscle mass, but the changes he put his body through were drastic. He consumed only around 300 to 400 calories each day, which caused his body to effectively eat itself.

The transformation was difficult physically, but also emotionally for his wife due to the concern she had over him. "I caught her a few times removing her hand from in front of my mouth as I was waking up; she was just testing for breath."

When he attempted the same recipe for weight loss in his 40s, he suffered heart palpitations and had serious concerns about his health. When he went from playing Reznik to Batman, he reversed the whole process in what would amount to the largest weight gain of his career.

Bale's role as Reznik is one of his most well-known and memorable, though he wasn't nominated for many awards for the part. While his performance was certainly amazing, it was difficult to see how much Bale had changed for the part, which may have taken some attention away from his otherwise stellar performance.
