Alternate Versions Of Every MCU Movie We Almost Got To See
7. Captain America: Civil War Without Iron Man
When Captain America: Civil War was in the early stages of development, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were advised to write a version of the film without Iron Man, due to uncertainty around Robert Downey Jr.'s future involvement in the MCU amid a contract re-negotiation.
This alternate version of the film would've instead focused on the memorable Madbomb comic arc, with Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) detonating a bomb which turns humans into rabid, zombie-like "berserkers". Team Cap would not only face off against these foes, but some of the Avengers themselves would also end up afflicted by the Madbomb.
Ultimately, Downey Jr.'s new contract was figured out, and Civil War ended up hewing far closer to the comics (though, admittedly, still a pretty loose adaptation).
Would It Have Worked?: Hard to say, really. Markus and McFeely and the Russo brothers have done a fantastic job adapting potentially silly concepts into serious superhero movies, so if anyone could make the Madbomb work, it's probably them.
It's hard to imagine it being better than the movie we got, though, that's for sure.
