Alternative Oscars 2018: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

9. Best Film Editing

Dunkirk Ending Tom Hardy
Warner Bros.

WINNER: Dunkirk

This field is always stacked with strong competitors, and the Academy mostly got their nominations right, though it feels like they only nominated Three Billboards because the Best Picture winner is almost always nominated for this award also, rather than because the film did anything remarkable editing-wise.

In our field Three Billboards was switched-out for War for the Planet of the Apes, which was edited to a measured, patient rhythm before letting loose with expertly-crafted, kinetic action sequences.

Considering how crucial Wind River's editing was to telling its story effectively - especially how ingeniously that third-act flashback was interjected into the movie - it took our fifth slot over The Shape of Water, somewhat controversially.

With Dunkirk's expert display of its dizzying concurrent timelines, though, it's the easy deserving winner here, and will win editor Lee Smith a belated Oscar after being bafflingly snubbed for even a nomination for Inception.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. I, Tonya

3. Baby Driver

4. War for the Planet of the Apes

5. Wind River
