Alternative Oscars 2018: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

8. Best Actor

War For The Planet Of The Apes Caesar
Fox

WINNER: Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes)

The actual Best Actor field is a bit of a mess of missed opportunities, frankly. Daniel Day-Lewis and Timothee Chalamet were deserving nominees for sure, but James Franco was snubbed for (admittedly understandable) political reasons, while Hugh Jackman gave one of the year's strongest performances in his final turn as Wolverine.

The big snub, if utterly unsurprising, was Andy Serkis' stunning performance as Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes. Now, the Academy is clearly still wary about nominating performance-capture work, but isn't it about time the crusty awards voters got over their prejudices and saw these performances for what they are?

Serkis' performance combines with Weta Digital's eye-wateringly brilliant effects work to give Caesar one hell of a send-off in his final outing. It was never on the cards, but it would've been awesome just to see Serkis nominated.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread)

3. Hugh Jackman (Logan)

4. James Franco (The Disaster Artist)

5. Timothee Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name)
