Alternative Oscars 2018: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

16. Best Documentary Feature

Strong Island
Netflix

WINNER: Strong Island

The Best Documentary field is always a bit of a crap shoot: it's hard to predict who will be nominated, let alone win, and often the best documentaries of the year don't even make it to the final five.

Strong Island, director Yance Ford's investigation into the 1992 murder of his brother, is by far the year's most affecting and resonant doc, while the Academy didn't even bother to nominate the incredible Syria-set docs Cries from Syria and City of Ghosts.

Incredulously, Netflix also didn't push their deeply affecting doc Kingdom of Us, despite it scoring rave reviews ever since release. The streaming giant's sports doping doc Icarus is the most likely winner: a terrific film, but best documentary of the year? Not quite.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Cries from Syria

3. City of Ghosts

4. Icarus

5. Kingdom of Us
