Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

10. Best Production Design

First Man Ryan Gosling Corey Stoll Lukas Haas
Universal

WINNER: First Man*

We actually didn't include the Oscar frontrunner here - The Favourite - because as gorgeous and convincing as the movie looked, it didn't feel particularly transformative to just hire a stately home and throw some A-list actors in it.

Mary Poppins Returns meanwhile certainly did feel transformative, but some of the sets ultimately looked more tacky than wondrous under Rob Marshall's flat direction.

These two are replaced here by the criminally - yet unsurprisingly - Oscar-snubbed Annihilation, which did an incredible job making The Shimmer feel so tactile and disconcertingly real.

And, bear with us here, but cult horror Upgrade is making the cut also, if only because it created such a palpable sci-fi world on a mere $4 million budget. That is the definition of every penny ending up on the screen.

But our winner is, of course, First Man, for not only crafting a ludicrously convincing vacuum of space, but nailing the look of its period and making both the NASA control rooms and Armstrong family home feel thoroughly lived-in.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Roma*

3. Annihilation

4. Black Panther*

5. Upgrade
